Responsibilities

Ticketing:

TfL is responsible for the ticketing. Information on fare levels, moving around London and fare evasion can be found on this web page.

Procurement:

Operation of services on different modes across London’s transport network are awarded to operators via competitive tender process. London Underground is operated directly by TfL.

Rolling stock and depot ownership:

TfL owns rolling stock for the Tube. For rail, TfL has secured sale and leaseback arrangements on the London Overground and Elizabeth line. It owns and operates depots across all modes.

Public transport planning:

TfL’s work is guided by the Mayor’s Transport Strategy (MTS). Information on the MTS, its policies and development, can be found here.

Development of mobility policy / Transport system planning:

Through the Danish Transport Companies Act, Movia is responsible for the preparation of a traffic/mobility plan every 4 years. The plan determines the framework for the development of the public transport services Movia provides. The plan is prepared with the involvement of Movias owners, the 45 municipalities and two regions in the Movia area.

Marketing of public transport:

TfL is responsible for all marketing of transport services it operates.

Passenger information:

TfL is responsible for passenger information. TfL also hosts its own journey planning app, TfL Go.

Organisational model

Transport for London (TfL) is directed by a Board whose members are chosen for their understanding of transport matters and appointed by the Mayor of London who chairs it.

TfL is the integrated statutory body responsible for London’s transport system. We manage London’s buses, trams, Underground services, Elizabeth line, the Docklands Light Railway, London Overground suburban train services, river services, London’s taxis, a public hire cycle scheme known as Santander Cycles, the Emirates Air Line cable car and promote walking and cycling initiatives. We are also responsible for London’s major highways, all of its traffic signals, the Congestion Charge, the Low Emission Zone and the Ultra Low Emission Zone. Our objective is to keep London moving, working and growing and make life in London better.
