Thomas Geier has taken on the role of the secretary general of EMTA on 1 February 2025. Having worked with EMTA continuously since 2018, most recently as Policy Advisor, he is a long-standing and well-respected member of the association.

“It is a great honour to serve the EMTA community as Secretary General. EMTA has a unique potential and I look forward to supporting our member transport authorities in their work to improve the quality of life and prosperity for millions of Europeans through sustainable and affordable mobility”, Mr Geier says.

”I am delighted that Thomas takes on the role of Secretary General at EMTA, and I am confident that the association will be stronger under his operative leadership”, says Katalin Walter, President of EMTA.

Mr Geier succeeds Alexandre Santacreu who worked as Secretary General from 2022. “I am thankful for Alexandre’s work, especially the fresh start he gave to the EMTA Barometer. During his term, the EMTA community grew by five new members”, Katalin Walter adds.

A native of the Heidelberg area, Germany, Mr. Geier has worked with two EMTA member organisations. After studying in the Netherlands, he joined the Greater Amsterdam public transport authority, Vervoerregio, from where he was seconded to EMTA. Now based in Vienna, he recently served as Head of Strategic Relations and Advocacy at Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR), the transport authority of Austria’s Eastern region. As EMTA’s Secretary General, he will continue to work on secondment from VOR.
